What exactly is Microsoft Silverlight?

I have it installed and sometimes theres updates for it, but i cant seem to figure out what it is. Apparently its like Adobe, which i guess i have too. Do i need both or should i only have one. And if so which should i have, and what do they really do? So which adobe program would i use, or uninstall, instead of silverlight?
ummm wow please dont just copy the wikipedia entry obviously i thought of that already. that doesnt help me.

Microsoft Silverlight is a web application framework that provides functionalities similar to those in Adobe Flash, integrating multimedia, graphics, animations and interactivity into a single runtime environment. Initially released as a video streaming plugin, later versions brought additional interactivity features and support for .NET languages and development tools. The current version, 3.0, was released on July 9, 2009.

    MICROSOFT SAYS:
"Silverlight is a powerful development platform for creating engaging, interactive user experiences for Web, desktop, and mobile applications when online or offline."

    I’D SAY:
It is just Microsoft’s attemp to compete with Adobe Flash for interactive multimedia web elements. It doesn’t seem to be all that popular since most web developers LOVE the creative suite programs from adobe and won’t switch.

    BOTTOM LINE:
Keep it on your PC, it may be used on some pages in the future.

Its pretty much the equivalent of Flash, only nobody uses it. It isn’t doing any harm, and just idles in the background when not in use, so there’s no need to uninstall anything really; just leave it as it is.

You need both if you want to use sites that use both. More sitess (like YouTube) use Adobe Flash because it is the more established and is on more people’s computers. Both Flash and Silverlight are proprietary platforms- there is no Adobe plug-in that works on with Silverlight websites and there is no Microsoft plug-in that works on Flash websites (there are open-source programs you can use instead, Gnash and Moonlight respectively, but they don’t work very well)

Here’s a brief history of Flash and Silverlight. Once upon a time, a man named Sir Tim Burners-Lee came up with this great idea- let’s make a type of document that’s easy to send across networks and special programs that will show them. And because this is a standard, you can view any of these documents on any computer using any number of programs and you’ll see exactly the same thing. And thus the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and the web browser were born. As time went on, more and more features were added to the Internet. CSS allows people to make more complex layouts with more detail and Javascript allows people to create dynamic webpages that respond to user interaction. But, with these new features came inconsistencies. So along came Flash with its wonderful development environment that allows people to write programs in a modified version of Javascript and embed them in a webpage. It is guaranteed to look exactly the same on every browser that supports Flash (no, it isn’t all of them). And everything was good. A few years ago, Microsoft decided to leverage their .NET platform (a new set of programming tools they developed in 2001) to make a similar program but instead of using Javscript, you could code in any language you wanted to. That’s Silverlight. I believe Netflix uses Sliverlight among other websites, but it’s not nearly as popular as flash.
