I’m a total novice to computer programming. What is the best possible recommended sources for someone who knows nothing?
Start by learning how to google search, do this. in the search pane , put this < free+basic computer programming+tutorials >
check what shows in that window.. took less than a second

With no money, you can use the internet. But you should really be deciding which language to learn first. They all have their upsides and downsides.
For web pages, I think echoecho.com is a good resource.
I can’t remember the page for Java…
Just one thing:
Java Does Not Equal Javascript
Trust me, I sorta know both.
But if you ask me, the best combo is to get a nice book and use the internet.

A well written book. You can learn free from websites, but usually the quality of writing is better in a published book. Just go to amazon, search for the topic you want to learn, and find the bestseller. Just read the description to make sure it really is for beginners.
Plus, unless you have 2 monitors, it’s easier to read out of a book while looking at what you’re doing on the screen, than to switch between 2 windows.

There are many good starting points others have referenced. If you’d share a bit more about what your ambitions are, it would help us point you in the direction best for learning what you want to know.
It’s not that you can’t take the skills to other languages and other tasks, but that you’ll need something that motivates you and excites you, or it’ll be not only less fun, but harder to understand too.

One thing you may want to look at is Alice.org. It is not a programming course, but creates an interactive programming environment.
One tutorial I found fantastic is Learning to Program, which covers a couple programming languages, but has Python as it’s main focus. Python is really a great language to start learning with if you would like to get a feeling for what programming is all about.
If you are interested in web scripting the PHP may be another nice language to start with. I used practicalphp for a tutorial and enjoyed working through that.
