I’m getting sick of Microsoft assuming what is good for my PC and what is not. This Microsoft Silverlight is in my super important most needed updates. I’m not a secretary, I don’t care about ipods or phones, I JUST WANT MY ONLINE GAMES TO RUN WITHOUT LAGG!!!

Does Microsoft care about online games??? I seriously doubt it!

Silverlight was Microsoft’s attempt to take some market share from Adobe Flash. It’s a very similar product. Not many sites other than MS sites run with Silverlight though, and I’ve yet to find an MS site that didn’t run without it. I uninstall it and mark it as ignored in updates whenever possible.

i don’t want any .zip files because I don’t know what to do with those. But i tried to download it for netflix but it asks for an administrative password. i don’t want to go in and hack the computer but if thats the only way then its okay. Could I take the file from home on a pindrive and use it that way?

Public access systems, if they are properly secured, do not permit just anyone to ‘install’ anything…especially powerful scripting junk like Silverlight.
Lockdown would include USB & disk bays.
Initial impression I get ("asks for an administrative password") tells me this is the scenario.

I did a little research and from what I could tell, they do the same thing. Which one is better and does it hurt to have them both on my comp?

One is made by Adobe and the other by Microsoft. They do similar things, but also have features that are not compatible with the other program. Of the two, flash is more common (been around longer). It does not harm your computer to have both on it. As small as they are, you might be giving up the hard drive space need to store about two songs if you have them both. Barely noticeable.

I’m working on a web app, but I want Mac users to be able to use it as well. Will they be able to use it if I write it in Silverlight?

There is a program called Moonlight that is part of Mono Tools. Moonlight is the Silverlight equivilant for Linux and Unix/X11 based systems.

Moonlight 2 was released in December 2009. It’s unlikely that it will work with Silverlight 4.0, but it will support older versions.

What are the main things that microsoft siliverlight is used for? I want to uninstall it but only if it is something i dont use! But I don’t know if it is something i use! I don’t ever open it but is it something like that you use and don’t really know you use it? thanks for the help people

Microsoft Silverlight is just like an flash player which runs in web browsers. Microsoft Silverlight is not used in many webpages but webpages which uses silverlight will run smoothly.

I took my laptop to school and used the wireless internet there. when i went back home i use the internet cable But now that I am at home, all the graphs and pictures for websites don’t show. Example they will ask to download silverlight software or java, but I already have the newest versionof both of these on the computer.
What should I do???

This likely has nothing to do with SilverLight or JAVA.

Most likely, you do NOT have the right Permissions to access your school’s Servers from outside the school.

Talk to your school’s Tech Support staff.

Can I delete/uninstall it?
What’s it used for?

Yes, you can uninstall it (not delete, you need to uninstall it if you want to get rid of it). It’s not necessary.

I run windows vista and i wanted to update silverlight and went into the settings and was not able to set any of the update settings because all were grayed out. i right clicked and chose run as administrator but it would still not allow me to choose any options. i just want to know how to enable the auto update function.

Some PC configurations cannot use Auto update. Read here. www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/resources/documentation/updater.aspx

Sorry it’s a dumb question but I had to download it to watch netflix on my computer. I’m not understanding what it does.

Silverlight is Microsofts multimedia platform language. It does not take up very much room on your computer.

Hello,

I am looking for a flat-file (or serverless) database that I can connect to a C# Silverlight application.

There has to be one, but I can’t find anything.

Please advise.
SQLite is an example of a flat-file database. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with Silverlight.

just use a xml file
