What is the difference if i got a degree in computer science, or a degree in computer programming. How are they different.

My understanding is that Computer Science is an entire field of study composed of programming, discrete Mathematics, DB design, networking, etc. Computer Programming is a job role/skill used in various jobs (i.e. Software Engineer, Accounting/Analyst, Data Analyst, etc). I personally obtained my B.S. in Computer Science (emphasis Mathematical Algorithm Design), and found that it has been very beneficial in my job searches. I worked as a QA Analyst, Software Developer, and currently a Data Analyst. It should be mentioned, however, in the CS path I went through Mathematics courses were REQUIRED. I took Calc 1 - 3, Numerical Analysis, Graph Theory, Modern Algebra, and Prob/Stat

BTW either degree can be complimented by a Business or Technical Masters degree, making you even more marketable to companies.

Good luck!!!

How long does it take to learn computer programming. I plan on self teaching myself through programming tutorials and books online. Any suggestions and how long it will take me to learn programming.

It’s a slow long journey. But not really long. I learned almost all of Javascript in less than a year. But Javascript isn’t that complicating.

I have microsoft silverlight plugin, but it keeps on playing and stopping. How can i get this problem resolved.

You’ll probably find the answer to your problem in the User Forums at the official Microsoft Silverlight website (see link, below).

I want to learn computer programming on my own and eventually get a job without a degree. I’m not able to attend college right now. So that’s the reason. I basically want to be a freelance programmer.

I also want to try and get as many certifications I can. Any advice?
I know C C++ is what I really need to learn
Oh yeah where do I get the certifications? Through college?

There are many programming languages possible to learn. The best one to start with would definitely be visual basic because of it’s simplicity and the fact that the programming language is intended for beginners. If you want to, you can also start with a language like python or java as these are also very easy to learn. There are many books and websites to learn every programming language. You could also start with a language like C or C++ but if you are entirely new to programming then C++ isn’t the best choice because it does get complicated.
Here is a list of websites and books to learn each language:

Java:

C++:

-C++ 7 in 1 for dummies

Visual basic:

-Sam’s teach yourself visual basic 2010 in 24 hours
-Sam’s teach yourself visual basic 6 in 21 days

C:

-C for dummies

Python:

Needless to say there are thousands of books and websites about these different programming languages but these books and websites are simply the ones I am familiar with and ones I know are very good. Here is a list of every programming language if you are interested in it:

I’m just starting (self-study) to learn Visual Basic 2010 Express. I have a little experience in FreeBasic but this is my first venture into VB. Should I start with WPF or just use Windows Forms? I want to create gui apps (for my own use to sort/analyze/edit/display huge quantities of data), but nothing highly dependent on graphics. Is it easier to start with Forms, or should I dive right into WPF while learning VB? Thanx in advance.

I’d start with regular windows forms. But go back and do those same exercises in WPF.

Which version of Visual Studio is needed? (I have Visual C# 2005)
Which .NET Framework is needed (I have 3.5)

So do I need more updated versions of those software or do I just have to download a certain program?
Does it come automatically with VS 2008/2010 or will I have to install something else

You would be best working with Visual C# 2008 or 2010 and Framework 3.5 or 4. If you plan on doing complex WPF UI’s then you may also want to look at Microsoft Expression Blend for designing the UI.

I have a cricket phone and like it a lot but a couple years ago i had to get a prepaid phone to go on vacation.I got a net 10 and have been very happy with it,I also for other reasons have a tracfone(or 2).I know the obvious price difference in the two but if they are under the same company what is the real difference in the service.Since i recently learned that straight talk is also under the same company, other then price what is the difference?

The difference is basically how you pay and how much you pay, and which phones you can get. They may also use different networks, for example I know that Straight Talk phones use Verizon (CDMA), but Net10 uses both CDMA and GSM phones.

My local junior college offers a certificate of completion program for computer programming specialist. You get a certificate, just like you would say if you were a pharmacy tech.

Its a 16-17 unit coarse.

What kind of jobs could you get with something like this? Where in California do you think i would have to move or commute to this kind of job?

The good thing is that I’ll get this certificate before i even get an AS in Comp Sci. Sooo i might as well get it right?

A programming specialist? That sounds as general as a degree in "computers", if you know what I mean. There are so many little niche areas of expertise that are very employable. The problem is you have to be an expert at something because to get employed you have to be good enough at something to make money for the company.

Hopefully you’ll cover one or a few popular languages in great _working_ detail. Beyond just learning the syntax, there are a lot of things to figure out before an employer is going to find you to be worth much. What you aren’t going to learn in school is how to be a good program designer, such as how to solve seemingly complex problems (with whatever languages, tools, etc.) without breaking a sweat. I think that takes at least a little bit of talent and a good bit of experience.

If you live near a big city, there are programming jobs nearby. The trick is getting your foot in the door and getting promoted, even if you don’t get hired for programming initially. You might want to see what you can do to demonstrate your skills, such as write a game or some little application that shows that you can do something from start to finish. If the company is not too big and corporate, then some little demo may be worth a lot, especially if you can show them the code and it looks nice and clean.

I don’t know how much the economy has recovered in the last year or so, but I remember a lot of qualified people looking for work, so that may raise the bar to require at least a BS before you can really take your pick at what job you want to throw yourself at. On the other hand, being self-taught, I’ve always thought a BS is B.S. and if you’re very engineering minded, you definitely CAN do anything you want, it’s just that you have to convince your hiring manager to pick you. I lucked out and managed to do that near the end of the dot-com boom, and have been happily employed since. I just hope that people like me these days can do the same thing.

I guess the bottom line is: YES. Get the certificate. If it makes you take an extra class, it’ll still be worth it. Not so much the certificate (which is a nice line-item resume filler,) but the extra time spent around other people in your industry. Sometimes classes are great because not just of the subject material, but you get to see how your professor thinks. For example, I still remember a class I took 15 years ago: "Printf is the Swiss army knife of debugging".
